7 Nutrient Deficiencies That Are Shockingly Common

1. IRON. A component of red blood cells which binds with hemoglobin and transports oxygen throughout your body.
Symptoms of Iron Deficiency may include tiredness, a weakened immune system, and impaired brain function.

Source of iron: Red meat, clams, mussels, and oysters, or pumpkin, sesame and squash seeds as vegan options.

2. IODINE. A mineral, essential for normal thyroid function.

Thyroid hormones are involved in many bodily processes, such as growth, brain development, metabolic regulation, and bone maintenance.
Source of iodine: seaweed, fish, dairy and eggs.

3.​ ​VITAMIN D. Also known as the “sunshine vitamin”.
Adults who are deficient in vitamin D may experience muscle weakness, bone mass loss, and an increased risk of fractures. In children it may delay growth, and soften bones. Sources of Vitamin D: Cod liver oil, fattish fish, and egg yolks. As it is available in few foods, individuals who are deficient may want to take a supplement or increase their exposure to the sun.

4. MAGNESIUM. Essential for bone and teeth structure.

Low intake intake of magnesium is associated with several conditions, including type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

5. VITAMIN A.​ ​helps form and maintain healthy skin, teeth, bones and cell membranes.
It is as well vital in the production of eye pigments, necessary to maintain one’s vision. Source of Vitamin A: Organs, fish liver oil, sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark green, leafy vegetables.
